As the world mourns the loss of Sen. Ted Kennedy, people in Charlottesville who knew him speak out about their memories and reflect on his life.

James Young, a professor at the University of Virginia, got a chance to know Kennedy through a recent history project.

Beginning in 2004, Young interviewed the late senator dozens of times and even documented Kennedy's life in several articles.

Kennedy visited the campus in 2006 to talk about the history project.

Young says he enjoyed working with Kennedy and that he'll be greatly missed.

"For him, public service was something that he took very seriously and he is the driving energy and dedication was and was just making life a little bit better for as many people as he could," says Young.

Kennedy graduated from the UVA Law School in 1959.
