Rockingham County residents will have another chance to vote for a four-percent meals tax come November.
Restaurants in the City of Harrisonburg already pay an 11-percent tax per meal. However the proposed tax wouldn't affect on those within town or city limits.
If the tax passes in Rockingham County, it would raise the tax to nine-percent when a person eats out.
In the shadow of big business, Organic Grounds, a smaller coffee house on the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County line, is already paying a meals tax.
Owner Lee Ann Jeffer says the shop pays about 25 cent per cup of coffee. It may not seem like a lot, she says the meals tax bill is about $500 to $600 a month.
"It would affect my customers and how often they decide they want to eat out. We have some customers who eat out every day. And if the tax goes up, they're going to feel like, 'Well, maybe I need to cut a day out to balance that increase in taxes,'" says Jeffer.
The Massanutten Resort would be included in the tax.
Business manager Sarah Elson says, "We don't know what impact [the proposed tax] will have, but tourists to the area will be affected by it."
The meals tax failed when it was on the ballot last year. Residents will vote once again this November.
