A retired police lieutenant shot himself and injured two other diners when a gun he had tucked in his waistband went off in a Danville restaurant.

The retired officer, 73-year-old John William Martin Jr., suffered a leg injury Monday and the other two diners were treated at Danville Regional Medical Center for injuries described as non-life-threatening. All three were injured by the splintered bullet.

Restaurant owner William Wyatt said the retired officer from Blairs was in the back of his establishment when the gun discharged. About 110 customers were in the restaurant at the time.

Police are investigating and charges are pending. Martin retired more than 20 years ago from the Danville force.

Why was the gun loaded, a round chambered, and the safety mechanism not in use? Let him share a jail cell with Plaxico Burress.
