More than a dozen students were treated at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and released, following a school bus crash in Keezletown Thursday afternoon.
The students were on their way home from Cub Run Elementary and Montevideo Middle schools when their school bus hit a tree.
When emergency service crews arrived, students were waiting in a nearby yard, where some of them were treated and released to their parents.
Others took another school bus home.
"The principals of the schools were here along with some secretaries, and some counselors that were here to help with the scene," says Rockingham County Public Schools transportation director Jim Slye.
Slye says parents were immediately notified about the crash and the status of their child.
Out of the 62 students on board, a total of 16 checked in to RMH. The injuries were minor.
"Mostly bumps, bruises, scrapes, sprains and a lot of shaken up children, but nothing life threatening," says Debra Thompson, director of corporate communications for RMH.
She says treating so many students at one time was possible due to a team effort.
"We were very fortunate that the school system alerted their emergency preparedness plan, and were able to send some of their officials over here to help triage parents, which was really helpful in helping us get parents back to their children in a more timely fashion," says Thompson.
State police continue to investigate this crash. A witness on the scene says a dump truck ran the bus off the road.

Crystal, I happen to know that a lot of the children involved were hispanic and I think that it is great that we have a hispanic population involved with community news and posting their feelings. The hispanic parents may not be able to spell correctly 100% of the time, but at least they are making their children go to school. Please leave the spelling and grammar check to another less sensitive story.
