A Charlottesville priest has been forced to resign for sexually abusing a teen-age student more than 20 years ago.
The Catholic Diocese of Richmond says that Bishop Walter Sullivan requested and received the resignation Tuesday of the Reverend Julian Goodman, the pastor of Holy Comforter Parish in Charlottesville.
The diocese said Goodman sexually abused James Kronzer of Washington, DC, from 1976 to 1979. The incidents occurred at Saint Anne Parish in Colonial Heights, where Goodman was pastor, and at Saint John Vianney Seminary in Goochland, a parochial high school where Kronzer was a student.
Kronzer did not report the abuse until 1994, when Goodman was pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Norfolk. Goodman was placed on administrative leave and was required to undergo therapy.
Goodman, a priest for 36 years, will be retired immediately in compliance with new church guidelines.
The disclosure comes one day after the diocese defended its handling of an investigation of sexual impropriety by a Richmond-area priest that led to the resignation of four members of the diocese's sexual abuse panel.
