The Virginia Department of Agriculture reports that only 92 of the 197 farms affected by the flu remain under quarantine. Thirty-three farms have gotten the go-ahead to repopulate.
Virginia Congressman Bob Goodlatte says millions of dollars have been lost by the farmers and he believes they should get it all back. He says we're on the right track.
"We have been successful in getting the Secretary of Agriculture Anne Veneman to recommend to the president that the federal government provide assistance," said Goodlatte. "This is unprecedented for low path avian flu."
Goodlatte says he's not sure when the farmers will get assistance, but he's confident it will happen.
Nearly five million turkeys and chickens in six counties have been destroyed. There have been no new cases since July 2.
