A single car crash in Augusta County has left a teenage girl in critical condition. The accident happened on the 1000 block of Dam Town Road around 7:00 a.m.

Virginia State Police say, with no skid marks and no other car, there's no evidence of what caused the girl to crash.

Police speculate the girl may have fallen asleep at the wheel. She was driving on Dam Town Road, struck a tree and wound up on the other side of the road.

The jaws of life were used to remove the 16 year old from the wrecked Toyota. Chains attached to a tree were used to raise the car and allow crews access to the girl.

She was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Police say the road is heavily traveled.

Virginia State Police Master Trooper Kenneth Hyden says, "Unfortunately, this is a main stretch of road from the Fort Defiance High School to the Crimora/New Hope area, where a lot of students drive. Therefore, when you have a lot of students driving their cars, you're going to have a lot of accidents."

Police say, with all the hills, twists and turns in the road, this area has a history of being difficult to navigate.

They say, had the victim been wearing a seat belt, her injuries may not have been as severe.

State police confirm the girl is a student at Fort Defiance High School. They say reckless driving charges may be filed.

I think that Angela was a special girl. It may have been her time but it was an awful way for her life to end. Instead of people saying stuff about her slowing down or wearing a seatbelt they should be more concerned about how the family is doing and if there is a way to help. I love and miss u Angela. R.I.P

i use to live on dam town road. i know how dangerous it can be. i knew angela and she was a bright, sweet, young lady. i am a student at fdhs. we had many great students that we lost...some in car accidents. people need to show respect and give support. if you are a parent and your child got into a serious car accident that is fatal would you want people typing crude things about them? i wouldnt want that! i pray for the family ...i miss you angela :)

I do not believe that WHSV should be posting these rude comments on this page about this child. They need to stop. I know when I was a teenager my parents had a very active role in my life and still do but I didn't always listen to them. No one knows what happened on this wreck so shut up already. If this was your child how would you feel if other assualted you the same you are? Don't think that your child is a saint cause NONE of us are. Leave her and her parents alone and let them be at peace. you people that are assualting them make me sick and my God judge you for your actions when you meet him. Prayers are still with Angela's family.
