A Fort Defiance High School student remains in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center after crashing her car Monday.
Sixteen-year-old Angela Kania is in a medically induced coma at the hospital after an accident on Dam Town Road. On Tuesday morning, students held a moment of silence for her.
Monday night's powderpuff game between the juniors and the seniors was dedicated to her.
"It was really hard to just go out there and play. It was all you can think about," says Annie Shreckhise, Kania's friend and junior quarterback.
Police say they don't know the cause of the crash, but they say the high school junior may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Officials say Kania was also not wearing her seat belt.
Fort Defiance Principal Larry Landes says the crash gives students something about which to think.
"Kids, high school kids, tend to have the mindset that they are invincible, nothing could ever happen to them. And I think with what happened yesterday and the accident, it becomes more real to them, and they see that it can happen to them, " says Landes.
This week is also homecoming and students are finding it hard to celebrate the events and worry about Kania's condition.
Renee Wilson, the school's nurse, is also friends with Kania's mother. She is updating the students on Kania's condition.
"Having somebody tell them, even if it's every couple of hours, that she's hanging in there, she's doing OK, she's holding her own, we still have a long way to go, but there's hope. That's what I am here for," says Wilson.
Students are putting together cards, photos and videos to send to Kania Friday.
