State police say a tractor-trailer was headed north on 81 Sunday around 11 p.m., when the driver slammed in to three other vehicles at exit 291 near Toms Brook.
Witnesses told state police the truck didn't appear to slow down and crashed going 70 miles per hour. Sherry Lawrance, the driver of the truck that caused the accident, is in fair condition at the UVA Medical Center.
State police said Sundays are the busiest time to be on 81. It's also a time when distracted drivers can cause major accidents. "The safety is pretty good on Interstate 81 as long as the drivers pay attention to what's going on around them," said Trooper Kenneth Highland with the Virginia State Police. "Driving is a 100% occupation."
State police know it's a long shot, but they hope accidents like this will teach people to slow down and pay attention.
