The city council heard a presentation Tuesday about the demands that ESL students place on the Harrisonburg school system.
School board member Cathy Slusher explained the challenges posed with the expanding ESL population that represents 32-percent of the students. She says it means more teachers, more translators, and more programs all-adding up to more money.
"We have growth in our population, we have increased diversity in that we have 51 countries, represented within our Harrisonburg City Council," said Cathy Slusher.
The school system has put a new system in place called LEAP which helps deal with the increasing ESL population.
