Administrators at Elkton Middle School have been pushing for flashing lights to slow down traffic in front of the school.
VDOT originally said the number of vehicles passing by each day didn't warrant the signs, but a new study has found the signs are needed. VDOT also plans to widen the entrance to the school on Route 33 to 50 feet, making it safer for cars and buses to come and go.
"It's going to definitely improve the safety conditions for our students and our parents. The parents are very appreciative of what VDOT has done for our school and our community," said Joe Dudash, Principal of Elkton Middle School.
New 45 mph signs like these in front of Spotswood High School go up this summer.
