The family of slain Virginia Tech student, Heidi L. Childs, has issued a statement in an effort to generate additional leads in the two-month-old case.

Eighteen-year-old Childs of Forest, Virginia and 19-year-old David Metzler of Lynchburg, Virginia were found dead August 26 in the Jefferson National Forest, about 15 miles from the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.

The following is a statement from Childs’ father, Don Childs:

"As you are aware, two months ago today my daughter, Heidi, and her boyfriend, David Metzler, were murdered at Caldwell Field on Craig Creek Road, located in Montgomery County, Virginia. I have asked to speak with you today so that I may again renew my pleas for anyone with information regarding this horrific event to come forward and speak with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

"The past two months have been very difficult for my family, as well as the Metzler family. My wife and I have had to take painstaking steps to attain some form of resolution to Heidi’s life. We have had to do things that no parent should ever have to do. We have had to clean out her apartment, a very emotional undertaking; close her Virginia Tech accounts; as well as cancel her cell phone service, a very emotional event, losing forever the sound of her voice on the recording, which we have called just for some form of comfort. In going through her computer and viewing photos she had taken of David and her friends at Virginia Tech and elsewhere, we are reminded of how special she was not only to us, but also to her church and her friends.

"I want to take this opportunity to personally thank the members of the community for their continued support to our families. The outpouring of love and concern has been overwhelming and we are grateful. I also wish to thank those of you who have participated in raising monies to contribute to the reward offered in the case, as well as the memorial fund. We are very appreciative to each of you.

"I ask each of you who live in the area of the murders to think back and try to remember anything you can about that night. Any small amount of information may be the key to locating who committed this act, which has forever changed our lives."

Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 540-382-6900 or Virginia State Police toll-free at 800-542-5959 or e-mail at bci-salem@vsp.virginia.gov.

Rewards totaling $68,000 are being offered to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for Heidi Childs’ and David Metzler’s deaths.
