The battle over coal in southern West Virginia has moved into the classroom.

The Raleigh County school board has approved a pro-coal curriculum designed by retired teachers and the Friends of Coal Ladies Auxiliary.

Chairwoman Regina Fairchild says it's lighthearted but informative. Materials include a coloring book showing how coal is mined and burned for electricity.

But environmentalists say the curriculum is inappropriate.

Assistant Superintendent Janet Lilly says she's willing to look at curriculum from them, too.

Coal River Mountain Watch of Whitesville says it's working on elementary school materials about alternative energy.

It's also working with Aurora Lights to produce curriculum for high school and college students.
