A weak economy is taking its toll on the West Virginia Lottery's revenue.

Lottery officials say September's gross revenue was $5 million below projections for the month. Gross revenue totaled $110.6 million, nearly $9 million less than in September 2008.

Gross revenue for the three-month period beginning July 1 was $361 million, about six-percent less than the same period in 2008.

Revenue from racetrack video slots for the three-month period was $207.9 million, about 7.5-percent less than the same period in 2008.

Lottery Director John Musgrave attributed the decline to the economy. He said video slots revenue also was hurt by the opening of a video slots parlor in Pittsburgh.
