Arlington National Cemetery is accepting a Colorado businessman's donation of marble for its Tomb of the Unknowns. But the marble won't necessarily be used to repair cracks on the Virginia monument.

The Denver Post reports that John Haines of Glenwood Springs has been trying since at least 2004 to donate about $31,000 worth of marble sitting at the Yule Quarry in Marble, Colorado to replace the cracked monument. The donation was blocked, partly by red tape.

The stone is from the same quarry where the tomb's original marble was cut.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued a $70,000 contract to repair the cracks using grout. But The Post reports that officials have accepted Haines' marble donation in case the tomb's marble eventually needs to be replaced.
