An investigation is underway in Harrisonburg, as police try to find who's responsible for damaging tires on nearly two dozen cars.

Police say tires were slashed on a total of 22 cars in the 1300 block of Hunters Road.

A student who lives in the area and who owns one of the damaged cars says the incident not only cost him money, it also affected his grade.

"I was late to my classes that morning, and I actually got an 'F' on a paper. We had to show up and be there, and I didn't have a ride," says James Madison University student Fabio Montalvo.

Earlier this week, Montalvo says he discovered that all four of his tires had been slashed.

He wasn't the only victim. Twenty-one other cars were damaged, including one that belong to student Maribeth Jones.

"My roommates had gone down earlier in the morning and it didn't seem to be slashed, but later when we went out, the tire pressure was down," says Jones.

She was able to get her tire replaced, and she's keeping a positive attitude despite what happened.

"It kind of made me question the safety, but it was okay. I still feel safe here," says Jones.

Both student say they've reported the incidents to police.

"We are following up on a few pieces of information from some individuals, seeing some people in the area," says Mary-Hope Gangwer, public information officer for the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Officers will step up patrols throughout Halloween weekend to try to prevent similar incidents.

"We're definitely going to have officers out in the area patrolling, and we're asking anyone who may see something suspicious, on Halloween weekend, to give us a call," says Gangwer.

Police also urge you to give them a call if you know anything about the slashed tires on Hunters Road that occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday.
