The scene at the polls in Winchester Tuesday is very different from what it was a year ago.

Last year, voters stood in long lines to cast their vote in the presidential election. Tuesday morning brought a slow but steady trickle of Winchester residents to the polls.

The local race to watch is Winchester's Commissioner of Revenue. The current commissioner is not seeking reelection after eight years in office. Three candidates are vying for the open seat.

Republican Ann Burkholder, Democrat Steve Bauserman and Independent Rick Brown have been campaigning door to door up until the last minute.

The only other locally contested race is the 29th District seat in the House of Delegates. Incumbent Republican Beverly Sherwood is facing opposition from Independent Aaron Tweedie.

As of 5 p.m., Winchester and Frederick County report 30 percent of voters cast ballots. As of 2 p.m., there was a 27-percent turnout in Clarke County. No major issues were reported in any local jurisdictions.

A unique obstacle this year at the polls is the H1N1 virus. Poll workers in Winchester are offering voters a stylus to use if they don't want to touch the touch-screen voting machines. There is also hand sanitizer available.
