Rockingham County Firefighters say it isn't unusual for them to encounter minor injuries on the job.

The recent accident injuring two firefighters was very dangerous.

Captain Steven Sites says its a whole new challenge when it's one of their own involved in an accident.

"It heightens your stress level cause not only did we add two more injuries to the already that were injured but two of own people, so not taking away from the injuries of the other people it adds to the stress level and ups the emotions," says Sites.

He says after Saturdays accident involving two county firefighters working a scene on interstate 81, he is more aware of the safety precautions they take.

Firefighters have cones, flares, lights and even bright vests to keep them safe.

They even position their trucks to prevent an accident like this from happening.

"We try to position our apparatus so that it protects the scene, protects the vehicles or any injuries of people in the roadway, it also protects our people, so often you'll see our apparatus positioned at an angle no vehicles can come within a certain perimeter of a scene," says Sites.

Even with all that, sites says there's only so much one can with dangerous road conditions.

"Generally operating on a highway is very difficult and unsafe area for us as firefighters and emergency crew, its very unpredictable we have no way of controlling the other drivers actions other than alert them," says Sites.

Captain Sites saw the firefighters and their families earlier today.

He says both the families and the doctors are optimistic that the firefighters will make full recoveries.
