The shootings at Fort Hood, Texas hit especially close to home for a Harrisonburg family.

Barbara Alsahefski's daughter, Sarah, is a military police officer stationed at Fort Hood.

After making several phone calls Thursday afternoon, Barbara says she was finally able to reach her son-in-law living on base. He told her that he, Sarah and their newborn son were all safe.

The family was two miles away from where the shootings took place. Barbara says it is days like Thursday that make being a military mom difficult.

"Just the waiting to hear from her," says Barbara. "That was the hardest part. It's tough. You try to be strong for them, but I have my breaking points."

Barbara has two daughters currently serving in the military. Sarah was out of touch with her family Thursday because she was patrolling Fort Hood.
