Some in the Valley who have served, or are currently serving, in the U.S. Armed Forces reacted to Thursday's shooting at Fort Hood in Texas.

"It was quite shocking to find out that someone had done such a thing," says Air Force veteran Eugene Chavis who served in Vietnam.

He says finding out the alleged shooter was one of the military's own made it more shocking.

Without a clear reason for the shooting, Chavis says people can only speculate that post traumatic stress was a factor.

"It may be post traumatic stress and a person just actually snaps from combat, but of course you never know exactly what the problem was," says Chavis.

National Guard 116th Brigade Public Affairs Officer Maj. Nevin Blankenship is coming to terms as well. Blankenship says he expects soldiers to be put in harm's way in battle, but he says this attack has caught everyone off guard.

"It's something you don't prepare for. We're trained to go overseas. We're not trained to do anything on our base. Our training doesn't prepare us for that," says Blankenship, who also say he sends his thoughts and prayers to the family of the victims.

Some members of the Virginia National Guard were recently sent to Fort Hood for training. They returned to Virginia just a few days ago.

Some local soldiers plan to go back to Fort Hood after Thanksgiving.
