Community members flocked to the streets of downtown Harrisonburg for the annual Veterans Day parade.
While the day was full of laughter and smiles, it also was a time for dedication and remembrance.
Harrisonburg Mayor Kai Degner says, "We have to make sure that their sacrifice is never in vain and that we remember, not only them as individuals and as soldiers, and as heroes, but for the core principals of democracy that they died for."
Thomas Spangler, a veteran whose son is also serving, believes the new veterans memorial by the James Madison University stadium stands as a reminder to all of those who have been touched by war.
Spangler says, "I've lost friends and they've lost friends. So, the memorial means a lot to us."
Congressman Bob Goodlatte attended the dedication ceremony.
He believes the memorial stands as a constant reminder for the community, as well as himself.
Goodlatte says, "Across the congressional district I represent, there are nine who have lost their lives. And I carry their names in my pocket everyday to remind myself of the responsibility that I have as a member of congress to support our military."
While the ribbon has been cut and friends reunited during the celebration, young and old hope the Harrisonburg community will not forget.
Spangler says, "Just keep it in front of the community that there have been sacrifices made to get us where we are today and that freedom is not free."
Harrisonburg officials say the memorial has been a two-year work in progress.
Officials also are encouraging residents to visit the memorial during this week to honor local veterans.
