The Charles Town City Council has added its support to an effort to bring casino-style table games to an Eastern Panhandle racetrack.

In a resolution, the council said the prospect of hundreds of new jobs at Charles Town Races & Slots is too good to pass up.

Voters will go to the polls next month to decide whether games like blackjack and poker should join racing and video lottery at the track.

In 2007, Jefferson County was the only one of four racetrack counties to reject table games in a referendum.

The council's endorsement joins those of the Jefferson County Board of Education, the local chamber of commerce and other agencies involved in promoting tourism.
