Need is up in Rockingham County, and the Salvation Army hopes to respond.

The annual Red Kettle money drive kicked off Thursday at the Harrisonburg Wal-Mart.

The Salvation Army hopes to collect $115,000 this year, up from last year's goal of $100,000

A total of 962 families have applied for assistance, which includes nearly 1,900 children.

"Unfortunately, the need has risen so much more that we just needed to up it again this year. We are hoping that the community once again comes out to support us," says Capt. Duane Burleigh, with the Harrisonburg Salvation Army.

Red Kettle locations include the Harrisonburg Kmart, JC Penny's, Belks, Big Lots, Rose's, Kroger's, Red Front, Sharp Shopper, Bridgwater IGA, Dayton Farmers' Market, Shenandoah Farmers' Market, ABC Stores, the Elkton Food Lion and the Timberville Food Lion.

WHSV Poll
A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
