If you talked to people at the Harrisonburg Salvation Army Sunday, you'd have learned the organization was 400 turkey's short for its annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway.
The goal is to provide a turkey to 962 less fortunate families in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
"I wouldn't say I was worried. God lets me know that I don't have to worry, but I was concerned," says Capt. Duane Burleigh.
Then Burleigh got a call from Cargill, Inc., a turkey processing plant in Dayton, Monday morning and he was relieved of all his concerns.
Officials at Cargill heard about the shortage and decided to increase their original donation of 200 turkeys to 478, according to Cargill assistant vice president Milt McPike.
A semi-truck full of turkeys completed the donation Tuesday morning.
"We think it is a great cause the Salvation Army has been a great pillar in the community, and we are glad to be a part of helping people celebrate Thanksgiving," says McPike.
The donation puts the Salvation Army over its Thanksgiving goal, but the charity is still looking for donations for the Christmas season turkey giveaway. It hopes to get enough turkey for the same 962 families.
