A Nitro woman is dead after she was hit by a tractor trailer while trying to get a dog off of a highway.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday on State Route 25.

Nitro police identified the victim as 50-year-old Linda Sloan.

Mayor Rusty Casto says he received information indicating that the tractor-trailer hit the dog and Sloan ran onto the highway to get the animal. The rig then hit Sloan.

Police say the driver didn't see Sloan.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
