It was a different outcome after Somali pirates attacked the Maersk Alabama for the second time in seven months Wednesday.
The European Union's naval force says guards on board the U.S.-flagged cargo ship repelled the takeover attempt.
A spokeswoman for Maersk Line Limited in Norfolk, Virginia says the crew and captain are safe.
Pirates hijacked the Maersk Alabama last April and took ship captain Richard Phillips hostage for five days.
Phillips is scheduled to be in Norfolk Thursday. He plans to publicly thank the commanding officer and crew of the U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser who rescued him.
