Mail distribution might be changing and Valley residents say that could be a good thing.

"I can mail some things to Richmond for example to my mother and she'll get it the next day or even my son and if I mail something here, to someone in Harrisonburg, it may be two days later," says Shelby Nicholas, a Rockingham County resident.

The U.S. Postal Service started a study in early August to decide whether consolidating the Charlottesville distribution center with the one in Richmond would be a good idea.

The Communications Director for the Central Virginia area, Cathy Boule, says these changes would save money and better serve the public.

"We've been conducting these studies on a regular basis for decades, and I think it's important for people to know that being efficient in the mail delivery is first and foremost in this study, it's our first and foremost concern," says Boule.

However, for residents in the Valley, the thought of sending mail farther away makes it sound like delivery service would take longer.

"I would think it would be delayed, for sure. You would think the closer the better, but I don't know what the problem is," says Nicholas.

USPS says the change could actually speed things up and make things more efficient.

"I hope that it stays the same, or it would be even better," says Nicholas.

No decisions have been made yet, but, if this goes through, it could save the post office a projected $10 million.

The consolidation would not force any postal workers out of a job, but Boule does say it may require some redistributing of employees.

For the next couple of weeks, USPS hopes community members will provide feedback on this potential plan.
