An alleged shoplifter in Rockingham County got in even more trouble with the law when deputies say he was hiding something else, too.

Deputies say Luis Ponce was trying to steal a cell phone from Wal-Mart Monday. He was stopped by store security. Later, as deputies were searching him, they say they found drug paraphernalia consistent with heroin. They say they also found a hidden knife while he was being booked into the jail.

Waynesboro Police are searching for a man they say tried to steal $560 worth of groceries from Kroger last week. An employee asked the man to return to the store, but he left before police arrived. He did not get away with the groceries.

Deputies in Page County say a $16,000 piece of construction equipment was taken from a site in Rileyville over the weekend. The Bobcat skid loader had been left secured at the site.

A church in Augusta County had four computers and dozens of computer games stolen from a youth center Wednesday. They were taken from Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren Church in Churchville.

Deputies in Shenandoah County report that someone broke into Orkney Hardware Store near Bayse last week. The thief stole $1,000 worth of copper, a safe and some cash.

Staunton Police say someone set a fire in the trash can of the women's bathroom at Gypsy Hill Park Tuesday. There was no serious damage, but the same thing happened at the park's bathroom in April.
