A series of crashes along Interstate 81 have been causing headaches for drivers in Rockingham County.

The first crash occurred near mile marker 248 in Harrisonburg around 1 p.m. Friday. It closed one northbound lane and backed up traffic for about four miles.

A second crash around 2 p.m. at mile marker 245, also in Harrisonburg, did not cause as many problems.

However, other crashes occurred north of the city, causing backups.

Around 2:30 p.m., a third crash at mile marker 256 in Rockingham County closed one lane in each direction for a time.

Traffic was backed up for about five miles due to this crash. According to 511 Virginia, this was a multi-vehicle crash.

The fourth crash occurred just before 3 p.m. at mile marker 250, also in Rockingham County. The north left lane was closed.

Traffic from this crash was backed up about six miles.

Around 4 p.m., a crash occurred at mile marker 242 south of Harrisonburg and closed one lane on the northbound side. Traffic backed up for about four miles.

Congestion on the interstates may be heavier this weekend as students head home for Thanksgiving break.

I take I81 everyday to go to Bridgewater and I don't think its that bad. Yes, it has its busy times but its to be expected during rush hour. As for the troopers i agree most of the time i don't see a state trooper until i get to the Shenandoah county line. Trucks are not to blame either. These guys are out there to make a living and they can drive very well. If people would just learn to respect truck drivers then i dont think we would have a problem, or maybe its just the overall lack of respect from people in the first place....

The State Police have been underfunded this entire decade. Transportation has been underfunded this entire decade, and now we are reaping that harvest... There are actually fewer Troopers assigned to Rockingham County now than there were 20 years ago. In real terms there is less funding available to meet increased transportation necessity. And why? Because our Valley representatives to the General Assembly want to promise you that more can be done with less, and that they will never under any circumstance raise any tax in the world of the Lord, or the Shenandoah Valley... No action on improving rail. No action on improving I-81 overcrowding. No action on supporting our beleaguered yet dedicated State Police. Something for nothing does not exist...

I81 was built to keep the trucks off of route 11.That being done some years ago, where do you propose the trucks go now.I am sick and tired of everyone putting the blame on the trucks. Most of the finger pointers are probably the ones who pass on the right, drive in the trucks blind side, and never merge to the left lane when someone is broken down on the shoulder. If you don't have enough common sense or respect to drive on the interstate then maybe you should leave 15 minutes earlier and take rt.42 or rt.11!
