An Afton man, who is facing charges related to a fake explosive device, turned himself into authorities Friday morning.
Waynesboro Police Sgt. Kelly Walker says 58-year-old Mark Bales turned himself in at 9 a.m.
Police had gotten a warrant for him earlier this week in connection to a fake explosive device that was found November 2 on Delphine Avenue.
Bales is charged with manufacture, possession or use of explosive materials or devices, which is a felony.
Police say they found evidence connecting Bales to the incident. He has been released on bond.
Neighbors say they see a different story.
Bales' next door neighbor Tom Broeski says, "My wife freaked out, but I said that it is just totally ridiculous."
Bales is known in the neighborhood as a kind man that is always willing to lend a hand.
Broeski adds, "Mark blows up these stuffed animals at the rifle range. It's not like he does anything in his backyard. He hasn't even set off a firecracker here."
Broeski says neighbors have sent Bales e-mails and made phone calls, showing their support.
He adds, "It freaks him out. He doesn't know what to do when you are accused of doing something that you are really not doing."
Neighbors say, despite what investigators found, it does not mean Bales is dangerous.
Broeski adds, "I think people shoot deer and squirrels and everything else. I think this is a rendition of it without shooting a real animal."

I've know him for years, since I was a teenager and I'm over 50 now. Mark likes to blow up "things", not people not buildings (unless they were supposed to be destroyed). He is harmless to others and I doubt that he wanted to get caught for attention as Tom stated. It's obvious that Tom does not know Mark, not even as a neighbor. If Mark gets more than a fine it will be too much, the cops need to look for someone else to harrass.
Oh well, I guess Mark was looking for some attention. Definitely not too smart, if he did what they say. We certainly don't consider him dangerous. It really sounds like he wanted to get caught.
