A nonprofit group has until December 3 to identify the source of voter information it planned to use in a mass mailing to 350,000 Virginia households.

The State Board of Elections said Monday that it will turn the matter over to the Virginia State Police if the Know Campaign doesn't comply.

The planned mailing contained the voting records of targeted residents and their neighbors. The group dropped the mailing after questions arose about its legality.

State law restricts voting records to candidates, elected officials and political party chairmen. Sharing such information with anyone else is a felony.

Tony Troy, the Know Campaign's attorney, says the group will cooperate. Troy says the group used a "mailing house" and didn't actually have the voter list.
