Drivers may not notice a change coming to Harrisonburg roads, but cyclists will.

Harrisonburg recently identified 61 storm grates over which it is difficult for cyclists to ride.

Repairs will start with five grates at a cost of $2,200. Slats on those five grates are at least two inches wide, which is enough for a cyclist to get stuck.

Harrisonburg will look into replacing the other 56 city grates in years to come.

The city's grates are so old, new ones must be retrofitted or custom made.

Rusty, what makes you think that I don't own a vehicle. I'll have you know I own two, I own my home, I pay my taxes, I served my country, let's see what else...? Please don't make assumptions. As a general rule, a recreational cyclist has "disposable" income in that they can afford a nice bike. Now the bum scooting home from the store with his six pack hanging from the plastic bag...that's a different story. Are you going to thow that poor sap under the bus too...?

Sales tax is one thing, how about license, inspection and use taxes. If you are going to ride the roads you should also be subject to VA code 46.2, more specifically rules of the road. Just because you dont have a motor does not make you exempt.
