A new language program is coming to Harrisonburg schools, providing a new cultural experience for kids.
A voluntary program, where kids will be taught for half the day in English and half the day in Spanish, will start next year in kindergarten at Smithland Elementary. The city school board approved the program Tuesday.
Families would have to opt in to the program and traditional kindergarten classes will still be taught.
The idea behind the program is that students who start in kindergarten would continue in the immersion program throughout elementary school.
However, there are concerns about how to finance it over several years.
A of couple board members voted against the program. They weren't opposed to the concept but were concerned about funding this program beyond the elementary school level.
Stephinie Saeed has a pre-schooler, Amir, who will end up at Smithland when he's old enough to attend. He's already learning Arabic as a second language.
"I have taken both French and Spanish, and I am learning Arabic right now. So, he doesn't have much of a choice but to be as multi-lingual as possible," says Saeed.
English speakers at Smithland are already exposed to Spanish, and non-English speakers receive instruction in English. This class would bring the two groups together.
School Board Chair Tom Mendez says part of the reason for looking into the program is to improve education for students learning English as a second language.
Mendez asks, "But also, how can we create a program in Harrisonburg that's unique and that would be very attractive to gifted students and parents who are looking for something extra for their children?"
The move comes at a time when the school division's budget is falling.
"We want to make sure the program's sustainable," says Mendez.
Some board members are concerned about being able to take the program past the elementary school.
For now, parents like Saeed see it as an important opportunity for their children.
"I work in the medical field. Just being able to talk to somebody in another language can save a life. So, there are so many different benefits," says Saeed.

Henry and Kat - please stay in Staunton and New Market. We don't want to spend our time teaching you ethics, logic, spelling, grammar or civics. Your xenophobic, racist comments spew hatred and mask your ability to see what's really happening. Immigrants (not all are illegal invaders) must learn English. Do you think their non-English speaking parents are equipped to teach them English before the ever step foot in a school? The VA constitution requires local schools to enroll all children (regardless of citizenship) and teach them English. You agree they should have to learn English, right? So who are they "pulling down" in a dual immersion classroom? Since the parents have to apply to have their child participate in a dual-enrollment program, one where a kindergarten English speaking child begins their first school year learning two languages! Research shows that children can learn a second language much easier than adults. Teaching children 2 languages is harmful? huh???
Henry, you said it all! Also, what about the children that need a little extra time and attention to "get it" in English? Will they "get it" if the teachers are busy switching over to another language throughout the day? No, it will take more time away from them and they will fall behind. Teach your child the english language at home so that they can be equipped properly when they start school in an english speaking country and not pull others down due to adding more strain on an already tight schedule. Speaking english should be mandatory before starting school. "When in Rome, do as the Roamans do!" Adapt to your surrounding, don't expect to be "accomodated."
Another program to give to illegal invaders. We do not need kids to be taught in any language except English. They would be better to teach math and science at earlier ages as American kids fall far behind most of the rest of the world. If a second language is needed it should be Chinese so the kids can show proper respect to their masters in China. Because the scum in congress have sold the country into slavery by their massive deficits, our children will face lives controlled by communist and their whims and will not know freedom as America knows it today.
