For the last six-years Harrisonburg residents have been taking to the streets to make their neighborhoods safer, this year is no exception.

Officers go out into the community to talk to people and find out their concerns.

Last year, police met with about 1,000 residents and expect to meet about that many this year.

“We expect the same type of things, they're concerned about vandalism, crimes occurring and we want as much info as we can, so we can serve them. And we'll bring info back here to our patrol officers and serve community in better ways,” says Officer Joe Gangloff of the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Officers can't get to every neighborhood, but say you can still get involved.

On Aug. 6, lock your doors, turn-on your outside lights and get out into your neighborhood.

Police say community involvement is key to keeping your home safe.
