The Isle of Wight is looking to assess a tobacco tax to ease the loss of the county's largest taxpayer.
The proposed tax is intended to soften the blow of International Paper Corp.'s planned closing next year, taking with it $5.2 million in annual tax revenues.
Citing what he calls "dire times," Supervisor Phillip Bradshaw said he believes the General Assembly might be willing to approve the tobacco tax.
Isle of Wight County has worked with other counties to lobby the legislature for the authority to assess a local tobacco tax. Each year, the effort has failed to make it out of committee.
