In this week's What's Going Around, we begin with a doctor who's treating a lot of sinusitis.
Sinusitis is an inflammation or infection of the sinus cavities. Acute sinusitis lasts for less than a month. Chronic symptoms last longer. Symptoms include pain or pressure in the forehead, cheeks, nose and between the eyes, nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell or taste, aching teeth and even bad breath.
Dr. Greg Jesteadt says take Sudafed, Afrin nasal spray and Ibuprofen. If that doesn't help, consider a visit to your doctor.
In Waynesboro, Pediatrician Robert Fern is seeing more patients with viral gastroenteritis. You may have heard this called "stomach flu." This intestinal infection causes watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever.
Make sure your holiday is a healthy one. Be aware that viral gastroenteritis is spread by ingesting contaminated food or water and through contact with an infected person.
Each week, doctors report fewer cases of the H1N1 influenza as area schools continue vaccinating children. This is happening as doctors are bracing for the outbreak of the seasonal flu.
If you want a seasonal flu vaccine, they received a fresh batch this week at Harrisonburg Family Practice.
