Joshua Soto, the Associate Pastor at Faith Bible Church in Rockingham County, has pleasant memories of Falwell, from his time at Liberty University.
"We had a lot of interaction with Doctor Falwell," Soto says. "He would come in, he would hang out with us. He would have a lot of fun, he would joke around. He was always a jokester."
Faith Bible is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, just like Falwell's church in Lynchburg. Soto says Falwell's influence is very strong in his ministry.
"I remember going up to him right before I finished up school and him writing in my bible a quote," says Soto. "I believe it was, the greatness of a man isn't measured as the world does, with wealth and success, but rather, what does it take to discourage you? And that really pushes me in a sense of the ministry and what I'm supposed to do.
Falwell's influence can be felt throughout Faith Bible. His books pepper the library inside the church, and support for Liberty University is easy to find in the parking lot. Falwell's example has also shaped the teachings of the head pastor, Buddy Farris.
"I've listened to him as a young boy," said Farris. "My parents listened to him, so I think a generation has grown up, listening to Jerry Falwell."
And the pastors here hope people will continue to listen, even now that he's gone.
"It's not everyday that the Reverend Falwells or the Billy Grahams pass away in our country," Farris said. "So, we will never have another person like that."
Pastor Farris says he's planning a memorial to Falwell during this Sunday's services.
