The first major upslope snow event for the Commonwealth and West Virginia begins Friday and is expected to last through Saturday morning.

Snow began falling early Friday morning in the Appalachians.

The airport in Elkins, West Virginia has been reporting snow since 3:30 a.m.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Pendleton, Highland, and Western Grant counties until 2 a.m. Saturday with snow accumulations of up to four inches.

Most of the snow will be on favored western slopes, but snowflakes were reported in Franklin, West Virginia Friday morning.

Travel will be hazardous through the mountainous areas of the Commonwealth and West Virginia as winds gust up to 40 mph. Along with falling snow, blowing snow may reduce visibility.

Snow showers will dissipate as winds shift late Saturday morning, leaving the Valley and Highlands with sunshine for the remainder of the weekend.
