One of the nation's oldest Medal of Honor winners is fighting again, now with a Virginia neighborhood association that wants him to take down his front-yard flagpole.

Supporters, including a U.S. senator, are falling in behind 90-year-old Army Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II veteran.

Barfoot put up the 21-foot flagpole in September. He raises the flag daily at sunrise and retires it at sunset.

But the Sussex Square homeowners' association says the flagpole violates the neighborhood's aesthetic guidelines and ordered him to remove it by 5 p.m. Friday or face a lawsuit.

U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner is among those offering to help break the impasse, according to Warner spokesman Kevin Hall. Others are backing Barfoot on the Internet, including with a Facebook page.

The dismay that I feel at the HOA's treatment of the Colonel over the flag pole cannot be measured! This man who has spent his life in service of his country, and who was awarded this country's HIGHEST AWARD FOR VALOR wants no more than to show his patriotism, and it would seem that the egotistical little people of his neighborhood care more about their ego's (aka "power imbued thru election to a board") than the reality of recognizing this man's service and sacrifices to his country. If only we had more men like the Colonel!! I am a Vietnam Veteran, having spent two and a half years in country voluntarily, and frankly....I humbled by this man's sacrifices, and aghast at the reaction of his neighbors that would actually resent his patriotism and willingness to assume the duty of flying our great flag every day. Sir, there are many thousands, nay...MILLIONS who support you and respect you!! Stay the course!!

I think the Virginia neighborhood association should stick it up their rear! This man fought for their freedom and they have the nerve to try and tell this man that he cannot show his patriotism! If the neighborhood has a problem with it tell them to move!!This is whats wrong with America today!I'd like to say thanks to this man,and to his neighborhood maybe you need a flag and a flag pole in your yard!
