New details have come out about the man accused of robbing a SunTrust bank in Harrisonburg last week. According to investigators in various states, suspect Gary Latray has committed several robberies in a similar way.
People in the Valley know Latray as the man accused of robbing a SunTrust bank on South Main Street in Harrisonburg December 1.
Sister Grace Dillenschneider, with the Franciscan Collaborative Ministries, knew him as someone looking to change his life.
"He expressed strong conviction that he wanted to rehabilitate himself, that he did not want to move back into the type of life he had lived before," says Dillenschneider.
Latray went to prison for an armored car heist in 1989. After he was released, he went to work with Brother Ed Falsey. At one point, Latray was also mentoring troubled youth.
"At some point over the summer, he got mixed up with a different crowd and stopped going to meetings and stopped going to counseling," says Falsey.
Latray, of Syracuse, New York, is now wanted in connection with four robberies.
The first occurred November 13 in East Franklin, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. State police have named him as a suspect in the robbery of an F&M bank. They say he threatened that he had a bomb, which was a hoax.
According to WSYR-TV, an ABC affiliated station in Syracuse, Latray's next stop was in St. Clairsville, Ohio six days later. St. Clairsville is about 68 miles from Pittsburgh.
Investigators say he threatened he had a bomb and robbed a Factory Card Outlet.
The next day, investigators in Oakland, Maryland say Latray robbed a shoe store. Yet again, investigators say Latray made a bomb threat.
Police say a trip down Interstate 81 brought Latray to Harrisonburg December 1. They have charged Latray with another robbery and making another bomb threat.
He's been wanted by U.S. Marshals since June.
"When you've worked with someone and you see a life that is now taking a path that's leading to his destruction, it is a sad thing," says Dillenschneider.
Latray was last seen in Harrisonburg. Police say he was driving a stolen gray four-door Hyundai with New York license plates EVF-2221.
Anyone with information on Latray's whereabouts or in this case is asked to call Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050.
