Virginia's Department of Transportation is seeking federal reimbursement for $27 million spent clearing roads and highways from a December storm.
The storm one week before Christmas left some parts of Virginia buried under two feet of snow.
While Virginia estimates it spent up to $35 million to dig out, VDOT spokesman Jeffrey Caldwell said Federal Emergency Management Agency rules limit reimbursement to the 48 hours before the storm's arrival and its departure two days later.
"Typically in Virginia, we don't see these major statewide events. So, for us, that $30 to $35 million is certainly a significant investment. But, it's not absolutely unprecedented," says Caldwell.
Caldwell said the request is not a guarantee the state will receive all the federal dollars it is seeking.
He said FEMA will make reimbursement only if the snowfall was a significant amount.
