The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a six-year, $11 billion funding program for roads and rails on Thursday.

The program includes:
-- $2 billion for public transportation,
-- $322 million for the rail ways
-- $8.7 billion for highway construction.

Secretary of Transportation Pierce Homers says, "This new program clearly reflects the Commonwealth Transportation Board's commitment to citizens' safety, to improving the existing transportation system and to thinking beyond individual projects. It is a comprehensive package that takes a new approach to delivering the best surface transportation program for the money available."

A total of 548 projects could be ready for or under construction within the six year time frame. Of those, 206 interstate and primary projects will definitely be under construction and another 342 secondary and urban projects could be ready for or under construction during those six years.

Local projects include:

Acceleration and deceleration lanes on Interstate 81 at exit 213

Fixing the bottleneck problems on Port Republic Road in Rockingham County by widening it to four lanes

Bridge widening at exit 91 on Interstate 64

Work on the Southeast Connector in Rockingham County

Realignment and bridge replacement on Route 42 at Mossy Creek in Augusta County

Work on the bridge over Cowpasture River on Route 250 in Augusta County

Replacing the Compton Bridge on Route 340 in Page County

Replacing Jeremy's Run Bridge on Route 340 in Page County

Work on a bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad on Route 340 in Page County

Work on a drainage safety project at Maurertown on Route 11 in Shenandoah County.
