Washington's Metro transit system is working on a system to allow riders to pay with their credit and debit cards.

Metro board member Peter Benjamin says the transit system is working to allow turnstiles to accept credit and debit cards to make it easier for riders to use the system.

Riders currently purchase fare cards of varying values or that are good for a certain time period. Metro hopes to have the system in place in the next 18 months.
