A Dayton family is without its home Sunday night after the house was completely destroyed by a fire.

With temperatures just below freezing, fire crews were trying to stay both warm and cool while fighting the fire.

The fire started around 2 p.m. and had heavy flames coming from two sides of the house.

Fire officials say they couldn't fight the fire from inside because of the weather and because part of the structure collapsed.

A crew is scheduled to monitor the home Sunday night into Monday morning, when equipment will be brought in to tear it down.

The cause is still under investigation.

Officials say the weather made their work much more difficult.

"In this type of weather, we obviously have to be a little slower, a little more deliberate about what we do. Watch our footing, watch that our equipment hasn't started icing up, bring in some extra crews so we don't have to suffer cold exposure," says Capt. John Huddle, Assistant Fire Marshall with the Rockingham County Fire Department.

No one was inside the home at the time.

Fire officials want to urge citizens to make fire hydrants easily accessible and visible when winter weather hits so they can get to work quickly.
