A bill that would require local school districts to spend more money in the classroom is moving forward in the Virginia General Assembly.

The bill was introduced by Del. Dickie Bell from Staunton, also happens to be a school teacher.

The bill would require school boards to spend 65 percent of their budget on classroom instruction and cut administrative spending to do it.

It passed the education committee Monday and is scheduled to be introduced in the full house Wednesday.

Did you know that the state puts caps on the number of students that can be in a classroom? Especially at the elementary level. 25 in a classroom? Come on ask any teacher and they will tell you that a class of 25 is too big. Keep in mind that Mr. Bell comes from a larger division where I'm sure a greater percentage of their budget is directed towards administrative or support positions. This is not the case for smaller divisions. I think the question that needs to be answered here is how is instructional personnel defined? I agree that the classroom is where the rubber meets the road, but mandating a percentage may require some divisions to make modifications in the services offered. I'm with Not sure- this looks good on paper but what about the unintended consequences?

Oh me! I would need to read the specifics in this proposal but my concern is that such a requirement would require cuts in vital services such as buildings and grounds personnel, school psychologists, counselors, librarians, testing coordinators, bus drivers, locally funded reading or math support, not to mention the general overhead cost for operating the buildings--HVAC, electricity, water, and what necessary supplies like desks, chairs, tables......This bill sounds good on paper but I'm not sure it has been fully thought out.

I disagree, that is exactly what needs to be done in the schools. That is where the pupils get their education.schools waste extremly much more money than years ago.Athletic director in a high school, give me a break.

A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
