Four young local Marines graduated from boot camp on January 29. Three of them are graduates of Turner Ashby High School, and the other is a graduate of Spotswood High School.
How does their family about their decision to join the United States Marine Corps and their possible deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan? How has the young Marine changed through their families eyes?
"He's more disciplined, he's grown up a lot. In three months he's definitely grown up a lot. I've seen a big change in him," said Nolan Dean, grandfather of Ty Dean, a graduate of Turner Ashby High School.
"If he's told to go over there I'm sure he'd do it with pride and I'm sure he'd do the best job he can. He's a good soldier, he going to be a good soldier," said Dean.
"I've seen him do stuff there on the base that I've never seen him do," said Ed Mitchell, grandfather of Richard Bridges, a graduate of Turner Ashby High School. "When we went to one of the stores down there and came out, he stood there and held the door open for some ladies that came through, and before he'd never do that."
"Hopefully he'll never have to go, but if he does we've got to stand behind him and support him," said Mitchell.
"I pray every night that he doesn't have to go," said Bridges grandmother Faye Mitchell, "but I'm proud of him, he couldn't make me any prouder right now."
"Josh is a good kid, but I can't even say kid anymore. He's a good man," said Wendy Payton, mother of Joshua Payton, graduate of Spotswood High School. "I've lived with him, I've grown with him. He's taught me a lot of things."
"They weren't exactly happy with it at first. They cried a lot, after awhile though they started to accept it," said Joshua Payton.
"I've shedded a lot of tears. I have cried on Christmas, New Years, Thankgiving. We have cried our share of tears," said Wendy Payton, "but to see where he is now in life, it was worth it. It was worth it because he is a better person now. I see it and I'm sure everyone else will see it."
