Another winter storm has Virginia National Guard crews repositioning themselves in the Commonwealth.
Sergeant Donald Hedrick brought his crew from Lexington to Augusta County.
"Hopefully we don't get all the snow they're calling for, but if so we are prepared to help out as needed," Hedrick says.
Around 70 soldiers and 22 Humvees will staff the county and Staunton, many teaming up with emergency crews like the Augusta County Fire Department.
Lieutenant Nathan Ramsey with the Augusta Fire Department says, "The main thing is access. Their vehicles can go to places where ours can't."
Ramsey has relied on the Guard's equipment, including tow vehicles and Humvees. He says they can get the job done in places they may have had trouble getting to.
Hedrick adds, "We didn't get stuck anywhere. We pretty much try to go anywhere we want to go in these areas."
The conditions in the Valley and across the state came as a surprise for National Guard Sergeant Andrew Bowden.
Bowden says, "It was a bit unexpected. Especially in Virginia, where there is rarely that much snow in this area."
However, Bowden says after record snow fall and back-to-back storms, they are getting used to the challenge.
Their mission may go farther than responding to stranded vehicles, transporting emergency crews, and rescuing families in need.
Hedrick says, "It lets the community see that we are here to help and I think it builds a good relationship between the community and the National Guard."
The Valley can also expect to see around 45 soldiers and four Humvees in Harrisonburg, and another 80 soldiers and 10 Humvees in Winchester.
