Constantly running Harrisonburg snow plows is taking a toll.

Public Works officials say nothing major has broken down, but the tire chains on the snow plows are replaced daily because of constant use. Each cross link cost $5, and there are 15 cross links on each tire.

Crews have also replaced more cutting edges to city plows than years past. Public Works superintendent Ken Knight suspects about half a dozen cutting edges have been replaced, for "a couple hundred bucks" a blade.

But all in all, city officials say things haven't been bad.

"Basically for the conditions we are dealing with we've had a limited number of maintenance issues compared to what the events have been," said Knight.

The city runs 28 vehicles that plow snow.
