Some Shenandoah County leaders are worried about more than just snow when considering the safety of Interstate 81.

The Board of Supervisors is criticizing the bill recently passed by the Virginia General Assembly to raise the speed limit to 70 miles per hour on rural sections of interstates.

The board passed a resolution Tuesday opposing a higher speed limit.

Board members are concerned about the number of fatal crashes that have happened in the county, among other things.

According to the resolution, 20 people died on the I-81 in Shenandoah County in 2008 and 2009.

I can tell you it is not the speed limit at fault. Its the careless, wreckless - drivers out there speeding on I-81. West Virginia and Tennessee both have 70 speed limits with no problems. I know cause I drive to West Virginia and Tennessee on the interstates.

I can tell you all, that there are plenty of people who already go 70mph at all times on 81 and by reading this article it just shows how stupid shen. co. board or whoever thinks that raising the speed limit is going to affect the amount of accidents... most people already drive at least 70mph if not more, so there will always be accidents and a difference of 5mph wont change the amount of accidents that are already happening throughout the state. So I personally cant wait(and im sure plenty of others cant either) to be able to drive 70mph legally on 81 like I already do anyway on a daily basis.

I grew up in Shenandoah County and I too DISAGREE with raising the speed limit to 70. There have been too many fatalites on the stretch of 81 between Strasburg and Mt. Jackson. It is a horrible stretch of 81. Raising the speed limit to 70 would only mean that cars would travel 80. For many years I traveled 81 to work in Shenandoah County and some trucks may have governs on them but there were plenty that exceeded the speed limit. I believe that raising the speed limit would be a deadly decision.
