A former nurse's in-laws say she showed no emotion on the day that her husband's body was found in the couple's burned home.

Ruth and Dennis Michael were the first witnesses to testify as 35-year-old Michelle Michael's trial got under way Monday in Kanawha County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors allege that Michelle Michael drugged and killed her husband, James, before setting their Morgantown home on fire. They say she was driven to kill her husband because of infidelity, a dislike for work and insurance policy payouts.

The former Morgantown nurse is charged with first-degree murder and arson.

In opening statements, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Perri DeChristopher says Michelle Michael would have gained more than $700,000 from fire and life insurance policies.

But defense attorney James Zimarowski says Michael has an alibi for the time of the murder. Zimarowski accused the head detective of overlooking other suspects, including James Michael's ex-wife and a former business partner.
